Pop Culture cont'd
Two Cultural Perspectives
1. Modernism view:
Culture is hierarchical, ordered, rational. Divided into three types: Elite, popular (mass/media), and folk.
###
2. Post-Modernism view:
Any cultural artifact is neither "good" nor "bad" in itself. The manner it's used determines in's goodness (or badness)
Pop culture is making folk or elite material "palatable"

FreeRice.com / Digital Manipulation/Technologies
Began with Tiffany's Media Minute
FreeRice.com
does it REALLY donate 10 grains of rice per right answer?
Snoopes says so. Can we still trust that?
Could we incorporate this into our schools?
Advertisers get their exposure and the money is in-turn given to a greater cause.
How does it really track your rice count? Don't you need an account to "cash in" your rice?
Brainwashing us to think that we need to appreciate this advertising?
==
Media Minute 2
"Prince Harry Nude Photo Scandal "Could Get Worse"
A: I'm not going to show those"
B: Aww
Everyone: LOL
How would these scandals have been different before mass media?
===
Media and New Technology
Issues and Concern
1. Digitization of content "it's a power in society that we've never had before"
a. impact on each medium of digital production, distribution & consumption
[big tangent on power and information]
b. copyright/piracy issues
c. ethical issues (privacy, image alteration, etc)
The ethics of digital manipulation
