Pop Culture cont'd
Two Cultural Perspectives
1. Modernism view:
Culture is hierarchical, ordered, rational. Divided into three types: Elite, popular (mass/media), and folk.
###
2. Post-Modernism view:
Any cultural artifact is neither "good" nor "bad" in itself. The manner it's used determines in's goodness (or badness)
Pop culture is making folk or elite material "palatable"

FreeRice.com / Digital Manipulation/Technologies
Began with Tiffany's Media Minute
FreeRice.com
does it REALLY donate 10 grains of rice per right answer?
Snoopes says so. Can we still trust that?
Could we incorporate this into our schools?
Advertisers get their exposure and the money is in-turn given to a greater cause.
How does it really track your rice count? Don't you need an account to "cash in" your rice?
Brainwashing us to think that we need to appreciate this advertising?
==
Media Minute 2
"Prince Harry Nude Photo Scandal "Could Get Worse"
A: I'm not going to show those"
B: Aww
Everyone: LOL
How would these scandals have been different before mass media?
===
Media and New Technology
Issues and Concern
1. Digitization of content "it's a power in society that we've never had before"
a. impact on each medium of digital production, distribution & consumption
[big tangent on power and information]
b. copyright/piracy issues
c. ethical issues (privacy, image alteration, etc)
The ethics of digital manipulation

Honey Boo Boo, Effects Theory
Media Minute:
"Honey Boo Boo" Ratings Top the Republican National Convention
It can be the best thing you've ever seen.. or even.. "it's the worst thing I've ever seen and I can't stop watching it.
Why are some media stereotypes acceptable?
Do you think that the producers intended a reverse-psychological effect to the public?
to where the audience would think "oh I would never let my child do that"
learning from other people's mistakes?
Dr. Bob didn't seem to think so..
A personal connection changes the perception.
Chosen exploitation of celebrities.
"That's how he chose to be"
Cameras can influence how people begin to act.
What is their motivation?
Who's exploiting whom?
"People are watching this?! What about more important information such as the elections?!"
'Society should know better'
Uses & Gratifications Theory
(I think the media minute is going to take up our entire class time)
We're all storytellers in media..and we kinda like to embellish a little bit
Effects Theory of Mass Comm
"The Plug-in Drug" "Attorney General's Commission on Pornography" "Comic Supplements Publicly Denouncing" "Music Videos Promotes Adolescent Aggression"
Theory:
Hypodermic Needle
If I connect you to a violent movie and it's gonna make you do something.
"Let's hook up parts of your body and show you a violent cartoon and see what happens to you" We measured your arousal/excitement.
The soft scientists cannot explain or control the way the organism responds.
Effects model assumes that everyone will act in the same/similar manner.
Forbidden Fruit
Causing the problem
Teaching Sex on TV "We're not Ready"
ex. Viagra
ex. Herbal Essence

Political Ads and Media
Media's role in political discourse:
Enlightening citizens or lowering the civility level?
Who's to blame for the political discourse? Is it the media making a scene? or is it the same old politics with a bigger microphone?
Politicians will do/say more ridiculous claims in-order to get attention.
STUDENT: Audiences are given more opinion rather than fact. All we hear is their opinions rather than real meat to chew on.
Negative ads are mainly used for re-enforcement. "Yeah! That's what I think about Obama!"
Keeping issues on a personal level..that's what's going to attract an audience.
====
Recording Industry
Digital Music finally outsells physical media, books look on in alarm.
From 2006-2009 around 14,000 people were sent letters from the RIAA accusing them of illegally downloading music. 90% of these people settled with a payment between $1500 - $2500.
In 2009, RIAA changed tactics and ask ISPs to police their networks and report illegal downloaders.
TN requires all its universities to have monitoring software and an IT staff person to watch for illegal downloads by students.
The top magazine in 2010 & 2011 was "AARP The Magazine".
Who reads Magazines?
85% of 18+ read at least one issue of a magazine p/month. 78% men, 85% women.
Average mag reader is younger, more affluent, more educated and "professional"than the average TV viewer
Average reading time is 45 minutes p/issue
Average magazine copy read by 5-7 people pass-along readership)
More "innovators" and "early adopters" read magazines
Newspaper & Magazines were discussed.
Newspaper - paper = just news?
Books statistics
Laughable challenged books..
Some challengers haven't even READ the book!?

Sexting
We begun class by discussing "Sexting" from teenagers.
Do you believe parental controls will stop kids from risky social media behaviors? (discussion)
What is the best way to teach kids about the things they may or will encounter (or already have encountered) on the internet?
[Kyle\'s suggestion: Instill Integrity in children: it don\'t take long to know wrong from right, teach them to use it.]
- Learn by others\' mistakes (woah, I don\'t want to end up like that kid)
- Unwanted pix from almost strangers are sent to me?! Was I just maltexted?
Teaching should go beyond, "No"
Teach, no one can \'forbid\' you, but understand the consequences.
Values? Public education gets raked over the coals from some parent who disagrees.
How do we change this?
Those in power don\'t understand this technology or what to do about it.
We may not be able to change law, but use your influence on the people who listen to you.
Political Strategists are in a generational divide. As the Republicans start their big convention (televised)..Obama goes on Reddit saying "Ask Me Anything" and attracting the online audience (aka our generation).
